Gilded Sparrow Mug

Gilded Sparrow Mug

$75.00

This piece is inspired by Hokusai’s 1825 woodblock print, “Sparrows and Chrysanthemums.” The naturalistic gesture of the oft-sighted sparrow, a shape we are so familiar with, plays against blooming wild roses.

The slip on this piece is very subtly variegated and the glaze has crazed, providing exquisite texture. You can see the tiny cracks as pictured. I consider these markings and imperfections as in accordance with the design and visual harmony of the piece.

Sparrow is thrown on the wheel from white stoneware, then dipped in black slip and hand carved into. I distress the slip, let it run, and embrace the individuality of each piece. Painted gold luster adorns the piece, highlighting the details of the image and the irregularities of the slip.

The mug comfortably holds 8-10 fl ounces.
